Let’s start this Adventure with a great warm up exercise. Exercises like this are a great way to develop speed and dexterity. And give that pinky a good workout too!

Focus on playing this all the way through cleanly. You can build speed once you’re comfortable with this.

For bonus points, practice this with a metronome before starting your practice sessions!

Tips:

1. Everyone has a hard time with the pinky. This is where we first start working on it. Be careful you’re managing your expectations… You’ll likely get better over time little by little.2. Go slow and work on it a little every day.3. If you’re trying to keep all the fingers down when you put the pinky down try releasing the other fingers. Keep them close but don’t worry about pressing them down.4. This exercise is as much about hand position as it is about the pinky. Try adjusting your thumb and wrist a little to see what happens. In general position the thumb behind the neck and relax your elbow and let it hang down.

Hi Tomas, My fingers tend to move together as I cup my hand around the neck especially on the large E, A and D Strings. I believe this is what the human hand does naturally. My third finger literally turns in and touches the second finger while attempting this exercise no matter where I position my hand and thumb. It’s impossible to keep the 4 fingers evenly spaced across the 4 frets like you do in the video. I find that I need to move the hand up and down the neck in order to complete the exercise. I’ll work on the stretching exercises but hopefully this isn’t a structural problem with my hand and doesn’t restrict what I can do on the guitar with more advanced chords and notes. I assume there might be a way around this? Thanks

Let me practice this area from 5th fret. I have been waiting to explore these frets 5 th and down wards to 12 th for a while. Now its the time. Kudos!

Hello Tom, I find it difficult to get my pinky in line with other 3 fingers, I have to constantly move the hand to make the pinky touch the string. Small hand I suppose? Do u recommend any stretching exercises for the fingers? Thanks

Hi Kishank123…

This is a stretching exercise. Do it daily. Try to go slow and lean into the stretch between the pinky and the 3rd finger.

It’s okay to let the other fingers come off the fretboard if you need it when putting down the pinky… but keep working it. Little at a time.

Here are some additional warm-up exercises you can do before this one.
